The Replacements were to me the greatest band America had in the 80s. Too bad that nobody heard them. Who in America wrote better songs than Paul Westerberg during that entire decade? Tom Waits and Dylan might have written better lyrics but Westerberg was untouchable as a songwriter. Still is. I couldn't believe the Mats weren't huge. Instead I would catch them at clubs, with a handful of people in the audience, while they're on stage drunkenly undressing down to their boxers and exchanging clothes with each other and they were still fucking incredible... Not even 'Can't hardly Wait' could crack that spandexed caterwauling din that America listened to during the 80s. A true American treasure and only a few of us realized it at the time...
